Summary of Technical Design Meeting, June 3-4, 2010
ArchivesSpace: RESTful architecture that uses SOA.
The ArchivesSpace Technical Design Meeting was held in New York City, June 3-4, 2010. Attendees included archivists , technologists from both academia and the private sphere, and managers of medium and large IT shops (see attendee list, below). After a brief overview of the archives domain background, the rest of the day was spent in break out groups consisting of 4-5 people on the following topics:
Discussion and Analysis, Part I:
• Storage/Persistence
• Authentication/Authorization
• Import/Export
Discussion and Analysis Part II:
• Reporting
• Workflow
• User Interface
• Discovery
At the end of the day, the notes from the break out groups were summarized and collected. The following day was spent analyzing and discussing the candidate technologies brought out in the break out groups. Both large and medium IT solutions as well as small, individual users were considered. At the conclusion of our discussion, the group decided that the new application will be built as a web application. The team has not yet chosen a specific technology to use in building the new application, but it will embody best practices for well-designed, scalable web applications, including the principles of Representational State Transfer (REST) and Service Oriented Architecture (SOA). Over the summer, the group will be reviewing candidate technologies (e.g. programming frameworks and other open source projects and libraries). Mark Matienzo is tasked with summarizing the technologies discussed in the meeting.
