ArchivesSpace Membership

Membership

As demonstrated by the prior successes of the Archivists’ Toolkit and Archon, archives information management applications have become valued tools for describing, managing, and providing access to an institution’s archival collections and for promoting standardized descriptions within the greater archives domain. ArchivesSpace is the next-generation archives information management application. It integrates the best features of the Archivists’ Toolkit and Archon and includes new features not present in either of them.

An absolutely essential part of the ArchivesSpace program is a community of users interested in and capable of supporting the continuous development of the ArchivesSpace application through membership. Membership provides the foundation for the ArchivesSpace community. Any organization that intends to use ArchivesSpace for managing its archives is encouraged to become a member of the ArchivesSpace community. That membership covers all the archive units that may exist within the organization and all the staff associated with each repository.

What is required for ArchivesSpace membership

Becoming an ArchivesSpace member requires paying an annual membership fee billed in July at the beginning of each fiscal year (see fee structure below).  Membership fees provide a dependable source of revenue necessary for supporting the development of the ArchivesSpace application and ensuring it remains responsive to the needs of archivists and up to date with changes in software and hardware.

Why become an ArchivesSpace member?

The most important benefit of ArchivesSpace membership is assurance that the ArchivesSpace application will persist for years to come and that an organization’s investment in the application is protected. But there are many other benefits reserved for ArchivesSpace members, and they include:

  • Access to

  • user / help documentation

  • technical and user support

  • community forums

  • training resources such as video tutorials

  • resources for migrating data to ArchivesSpace from the Archivists’ Toolkit or Archon

  • Ability to request feature enhancements

  • Eligibility to serve on the Governance Board, the User Advisory Council, and the Technical Advisory Council—the three ArchivesSpace governance groups designed to guide the development and support of both the ArchivesSpace application and community.

Organizations who choose not to join ArchivesSpace may still download and use the software but will not enjoy any of the benefits reserved for members of the ArchivesSpace community.

Membership Types:

ArchivesSpace membership is available for individual organizations and two types of membership are in place: General members and Educational Program members. (A Charter membership drive occurred from April-July, 2013, and resulted in 54 Charter Members, who are noted on the current list of ArchivesSpace members. The option for Charter membership, and its associated benefits, is no longer available, though, for historical purposes, you can view the ArchivesSpace Charter Membership Flyer.)

  1. General Membership: Enrollment of General members began in September 2013 near the time ArchivesSpace 1.0 was released.  Information about General membership is available in the ArchivesSpace General Membership Brochure.

  2. Educational Program Membership: A fee-free membership category established at the end of 2013, it is intended to support teaching of ArchivesSpace within library and archives educational programs. More information is available on the Educational Program Membership page.

Membership Levels

Membership is distributed across five levels and corresponding fees which apply to academic and non-academic archives alike.  The levels are designed to allow of all kinds of archival repositories—academic, public library, museum, corporate, government—to participate in the ArchivesSpace community.
